Uber vs Grab ?

What is the difference between Uber and Grab? Maybe many people do not know but you do want to know, right? Many may ask this question about Uber versus Grab in order to select the best choice to use especially new Uber or Grab drivers.

It is not preferred to have two apps namely the Uber apps and Grab apps to be on simultaneously in one phone. Actually, the drivers are allowed to register for these two services because Uber and Grab are two separate companies. Thus, it is not an issue or problem to download both apps in a single phone. Usually an Uber driver can also be a Grab driver unless if the person is a Grab ambassador. Even though being a Grab ambassador, one can still download the Uber and Grab apps in different phone and drive for Uber, as both Grab and Uber has their own benefits. It will be a loss if only uses one of these services, either Uber or Grab. It can maximize the driver’s income by registering both apps at the same time.

Uber versus Grab, now let’s take a look at the differences between these two services for some additional knowledge especially to those new Uber and Grab drivers. First, take a look into the registration. The Uber driver registration process is much easier than registering as a Grab driver. Perhaps the company has its own processes that must be fulfilled from a compliance perspective. Uber registration can be done online and via uberdost (an apps for Uber driver registration). The online Uber registration guide can be read online. For registration of Grab driver, you have to go to the nearby HQ or Grab kiosk or you can register as Grab driver with the alpha drivers (which has been assigned by Grab to recruit new drivers). A lot of information required including completing online training but it is worth having an account with Grab.

Next is the GPS. The GPS for Uber driver is more accurate. After the Uber rider requests a ride and is accepted by the Uber driver, the driver will follow the waze or maps to the location of the rider. The location provided by the Uber driver apps is more precise than the Grab driver apps. This makes it easier for drivers to fetch the rider. This is important because the process of picking up the rider can cause stress for both parties. Then, let’s move on to the coverage signal. The Uber signal can go further. For riders, it is considered as an advantage as it is possible to get an Uber car if there is no nearby car but for the Uber driver, it is important to see the distance first before accepting the job. It is advisable not to go if it is more than 10km. Not worth it. Drivers will usually only pick up riders within 5km away. The signal for Grab is safe and more beneficial for the drivers because the signal is within 5 km only. Therefore, the Grab driver is more comfortable to pick up the rider because the distance is closer. In addition, the nearest driver will receive the signal for both Uber and Grab.

Now on the payment. The payment for Uber drivers is more consistent as compared to the payment for Grab drivers, which usually delayed one day. Usually the payment will be transferred to drivers on Tuesday night but will be delayed to Wednesday night after informing the drivers through SMS. There is no such problem with Uber, thus, drivers can make a better financial planning. This payment is for a fee if the rider uses credit card, incentive and referral bonus that the driver has not receive yet. It will be collected for a week and then paid to the driver. For Grab drivers, the fee will go to the credit apps section first before being transferred to the bank account on Fridays. For Uber drivers, the fee will go into the bank account on Tuesday or Wednesday night.
In terms of customer services, Grab is bad, very bad comparing to Uber. It is a lot of drivers’ experience and must be agreed that this thing really happened. For Uber, the driver can contact CS uber via phone / email / apps and also the website, rakanuber.com. Many available options and quick answers. For Grab, you may need to call for 3 times and still may not be answered, and customer service is not good at technical, it is still available via email.

For the fares, in many cases, Grab fares are more expensive, making drivers love to drive for Grab. On the other hand, Uber fares are expensive when there is a boost and surge where fares can rise by 2x more than normal fares. The Uber fare is determined by the distance in km and the rider’s time in the car. Imagine during traffic jam, the fare will continue to increase too. The fare for Grab will increase too during traffic jams but not that much. Let’s say the fare is RM21, it will increase to RM25 during traffic jam hours. The fare will not be doubled as in Uber. It all depends on the situation.

For the drop off location for Uber driver apps, the driver is not able to know the location to send the rider except after the driver starts the trip (when the rider is in the car). Thereafter, the driver will know where the rider wants to go (drop off location will appear on the screen of the apps). As for Grab, the drivers know where the riders are going when they get the signal. This is preferred by drivers as they can have their own arrangement and time management. In airport for Uber driver apps, if the drivers get to a specific Uber FIFO Zone location in KLIA, a Q number will appears for KLIA and KLIA 2 (either one). So, the Uber driver will wait until the Q number shows 1 indicating that the next rider is to be picked up. For Grab drivers, it depends on luck to get the signal from the rider. Go as far as possible with arrival can help besides the role of the network and the type of phone used.
That’s a bit of a difference between Uber and Grab. Hope that it can help all the drivers out there. In conclusion, Uber and Grab have their own advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, it is not wrong if the driver is being registered as Grab and Uber driver while using only one phone.

With room for up to six people, Uber is confident that riders are able to ride comfortably because of that extra bit of space. Bear in mind that this car option will cost you more than Uber X as it can sit up to six passengers with a little more space. In other words, Uber XL is offering rides in bigger cars, with more people and higher fares. Expect to ride in cars like Toyota Wish, Toyota Avanza, Proton Exora, Nissan Grand Livina and Perodua Alza when you request for a ride with Uber XL. As mentioned, each fare will costs more for Uber XL as compared to riding with the normal Uber X. Therefore, be prepared for a little premium charge.

Uber XL is currently available in Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru and Penang. In Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru, the minimum fare is RM0.40 with a cancellation fee of RM5. The minimum fare in Penang is slightly lower, RM0.25 with the same cancellation fee of RM5.

With the introduction of Uber XL, it is certainly a good news for those of you with bigger family members, working professionals who prefer to travel in group or a bunch of friends who likes to hang out. There is not a need any more for you to request for two Uber X cars. Requesting for one Uber XL is cheaper compared to requesting for two Uber X. So, you should know which one is the better option.

Uber X

Some of you may be still be confused with the types of Uber available. Uber is offering many car options, depends on where you live, certain type of cars may be more than the others.

Uber X being the most common type of Uber option is more readily available as compared to other type of Ubers. Uber X is very friendly economically, with a regular car that fits up to four passengers. This Uber is consider to be one of the most famous and used services as it is the least expensive one. It is quite affordable and you can expect the usual four-seat cars like Perodua MyVi, Nissan Almeera, Toyota Vios and Toyota Prius. The drivers of this category will be using their own everyday cars. One important criteria set by Uber is that the cars must be well maintained and cannot be more than five years old. Some other requirements include cars with four full and independently opening doors, no cosmetic damage or missing pieces, no commercial branding and no large passenger vans, commercial or heavy duty trucks.

A ride with Uber X can be around 15% cheaper as compared to riding with a taxi. This will definitely saves you a lot of money if you are a frequent rider. Even better, Uber X is getting even cheaper in Kuala Lumpur areas. The further price drops in Uber X can increase convenience for those who need a ride either for a short trip around the city, to run some errands or meeting a friend for a lunch. Uber X is able to provide a safe, reliable, convenient and affordable ride. Uber X is not only available in Kuala Lumpur but also other cities like Penang, Johor Bahru, Melaka, Ipoh, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching.

Here are some pricing for Uber X in certain cities. For example, the minimum fare in Kuala Lumpur, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching is RM0.95 while the minimum fare in Johor Bahru and Ipoh is RM1.00. In Penang, the minimum fare is slightly lower, RM0.80. Apart from this, there will be a cancellation fees which cost about RM5.00.

Uber Black

Uber, the software company that allows drivers and riders to connect has expanded its services from low fare ride to a higher fare ride, which is called the Uber Black. Uber Black is much more expensive as compared to Uber XL and Uber X. Among the three types of Uber, Uber Black is the premium one. If you select or request for Uber Black, be prepared to hop into a more luxurious car and arrive at your destination in style. In other words, Uber Black is essentially the luxury version of Uber X.

Similar to the other Ubers, Uber Black also must fit into some vehicle requirements. For example, the model of the cars must be manufactured after year 2012 with minimum 2.0cc with leather seats. There must be no cosmetic damage, no commercial branding and no large passenger vans or commercial or heavy duty trucks. Uber Black is currently only available in Kuala Lumpur areas with a base fare of RM7 and cancellation fee of RM5 as well.

Despite its higher fare, Uber Black is still very popular due to its premium service. Many are willing to pay for the higher fare in order to have a better ride. For this category of Uber, the cars that are commercially registered and insured are usually the luxury sedans. Luxury vehicles are used in this category of Uber that include Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Nissan Teana, Hyundai Sonata, Mercedes E-class and BMW 7-Series. This is the most common and convenient option for those of you who wish to have a high end service. For Uber Black drivers, this can be a good option in earning some extra income as many people have classed Uber Black as one of the best ride services.

As mentioned, the base fare for taking an Uber Black is RM7. You will then be charged at RM0.30 per minute and RM2 per kilometer once you step into the car. Here are some examples of fare for your considerations but it definitely varies depending on the traffic on the day that you request for a ride. A short distance from KLCC to Jalan Bukit Bintang will cost about RM13 – RM15, from KLCC to KL Sentral will cost about RM26 – RM34, from KLCC to Bangsar will cost about RM28 – rm37 and from Subang Jaya to Publika will cost about RM65 – RM70. Riding with Uber Black from Kuala Lumpur to airports, either KLIA1 or KLIA2 will cost RM300, which is a flat rate.
